Bibliometric Analysis Workshop Strengthens Research Skills in Sarawak

UTS (9-11 Jun 2025); Curtin (16-18 Jun 2025); ICATS (23-25 Jun 2025)

The Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC) and University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) successfully hosted a series of bibliometric workshops across Sibu, Miri, and Kuching in June 2025.  Led by Dr. Armstrong Ighodalo Omoregie, the workshops trained participants from diverse academic backgrounds in using Scopus, Dimensions AI, and VOSviewer for bibliometric analysis and research visualization.

These sessions took place between 9 and 25 June 2025. The workshop was designed to enhance the competencies of researchers, academics, and postgraduate students in navigating scientific databases such as Scopus and Dimensions AI, extracting bibliometric data, and visualizing research networks using VOSviewer.  The hands-on sessions focused on Boolean search strategies, bibliometric mapping, and interdisciplinary applications, with participants expressing high satisfaction and interest in follow-up training. Feedback highlighted the need for more facilitators, improved access to tools like Scopus, and advanced workshops on topics such as Scopus AI for research gap discovery.

The initiative was not solely technically focused. It also aimed to foster a more research-driven culture throughout Sarawak. By equipping participants with skills in database navigation and bibliometric analysis, the program contributed to evidencebased research planning, cross-institutional collaboration, and strategic publication development.

This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening Sarawak’s research ecosystem and fostering collaboration among institutions.  Future workshops aim to expand content and accessibility, supporting researchers in achieving high-quality, data-driven scholarship.
